I've only read “Jesus' Son” once, but I read it in one sitting, maybe two, which means I liked the book a lot. Particularly Elijah and Elisha, both of whom raised the dead. By the time Jesus gets to the end of the lost son story, it had to be obvious that the theme was about lost things. Two of the wildest stories listed in the long list of One Story's recent list of top ten favorite short stories are from Denis Johnson's cult classic Jesus' Son. Luke reminds us that Jesus is like the prophets of Israel. Jesus' story of the Prodigal Son portrays a God who is like the father, never giving up on his children. Denis Johnson's Jesus's Son, a collection of loosely related short stories, tells various tales of loneliness, drug addiction, and disconnection. At the time of Jesus' stay on the Earth some 2000 years ago the story of Dionysus and Osiris were well established but nobody seemed to notice the similarities between the 3 of them?? This, his only short story collection, is unfathomably out of print in the UK. It is the gospel story, where Jesus, God's Son, proves faithful when humanity could not. The final story is the beautiful redemption of the heartbreak of the Garden and of Israel. Jesus' Son (1992) has perhaps as much claim to be a novel as a collection of stories. The name of this collection comes from the Lou Reed song, Heroin. In today's story, indeed, Elijah restores the hope a widow by raising her son from death.
